How Acupuncture Works

If you’re curious about how acupuncture works to help the body heal, this may help. The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for many diseases, symptoms and conditions, proven through controlled clinical trials.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for thousands of years. It stimulates the body’s self-healing mechanism and immune response, and potentially creates a profound shift in one’s health and well-being.

Using the Body’s Natural Flow

The ancient Chinese demonstrated that there is a natural and continual flow of energy (qi) through the body that originates in the organs and flows along invisible networks (meridians). Imagine water flowing through a river bed with tributaries. When this continuous flow of energy is unimpeded, we maintain our equilibrium and wellbeing. When it is blocked or out of balance, we feel pain or illness.

By inserting very thin sterile needles at specific points along a meridian, acupuncturists treat these imbalances. Moreover, we are not merely looking for a discrete or limited result. Chinese medicine is aimed at producing a change throughout one’s being, so that a global effect occurs. With my first experience of these tiny needles, I felt tension drain from me, a refreshed energy fill me—and I barely felt the insertion of any of these needles that are the diameter of a hair. The result is that the blockages are dispersed, the immune system is enhanced, and the fragile balance of the body is restored.

Treating the Whole Person

Additionally, the Chinese did not separate the body, mind, and spirit into separate compartments. Their medicine and techniques address all levels of a person. For example, emotional blockages are just as real as physical blockages, and are equally treatable.

Treating Trauma with Acupuncture and Qigong

Trauma patients have begun to discover the healing power of acupuncture and qigong treatments, and I am experienced in treating these people. We are bringing acupuncture to veterans of war, and this powerful multi-level healing mode is becoming more mainstream every day.
