Sonoma County Fires and Air Pollution

October 2017 Fires

My family was miraculously spared from the October fires in Sonoma County, but we have many friends and clients who were not —and are facing devastating losses. In all this tragedy, I’ve been so touched by the calls expressing great concern for our wellbeing, and I am thankful for being able to help in a small way.

Contribution to My Community

For a year after the fires, I provided free acupuncture treatments for victims in my community. I was thrilled to have this restorative treatment to offer to people around me who weren’t as lucky as I. With so much stress and many unknowns ahead for them, acupuncture provided a respite.

I’ve discontinued that service, but I sincerely hope what I did helped those people along their way.

Connecting with the body’s innate centeredness and calm is deeply reassuring. One man who lost his home and his farm (thus his income) said to me, “Wow, something to look forward to!” If someone is worried about the needles, I use essential oils on the acupuncture points and add reike (aka medical qigong), which work beautifully.

Air Pollution and Your Health

Additionally, the following article appeared in the New York Times very recently, and while not aimed at Sonoma County’s situation specifically, I found the science embedded in the article to be pertinent and helpful. Our air quality now, if not dangerous, is sub-optimal, and we cannot escape it completely. The recommendations in the article will strengthen our body’s natural defenses and help scavenge and remove pollutants from our systems:

Does Eating Right Protect You From Air Pollution?

“A small but growing body of research suggests that Mediterranean-like fare —
lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains and nuts —
may protect the body against the ravages of air pollution.”
